Ronnie Brown out for season
The Miami Dolphins’ wildcat may have been declawed.
Versatile running back Ronnie Brown was placed on injured reserve and will miss the remainder of the season on Wednesday, the team announced.
The move was first reported by ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.
Brown injured his foot in Sunday’s win over Tampa Bay and was on crutches after the game. He had been ruled out for Thursday night’s game at Carolina.
The Dolphins’ leading rusher was scheduled to see a specialist for further evaluation, coach Tony Sparano said Tuesday.
Brown ran for 648 yards and eight touchdowns and threw for another one this season.
Ricky Williams will replace Brown and start for the first time this season. He’ll also replace Brown as the primary triggerman if the Dolphins run the wildcat formation.
“Who knows? May not even run it,” a coy Sparano said. “Never know.”
Brown hadn’t missed a game since his season-ending knee injury in 2007.
At 32, Williams has rushed for 558 yards and is averaging a career-best 5.3 yards per carry.
“The guy takes tremendous care of himself,” Sparano said. “This guy has worked like crazy for the year and a half that we’ve been here. Watching him work the way he works, you wouldn’t think he’s 30-plus years old.”
The Dolphins signed safety Nate Ness from the practice squad to take Brown’s spot.
